As far as health insurance is concerned, you should check with your health insurance fund in good time before going abroad to find out about the formalities to be completed in order to obtain reimbursement of medical expenses abroad and to obtain the "European Health Insurance Card" - recognisable by its blue colour. Beware! The European Health Insurance Card is not valid in Turkey. For the accident insurance the same conditions apply for exchange and non-exchange students. Civil liability: in case you cause damage to third parties within the framework of university activities, so NOT on the way to and from university activities.
Personal physical accidents: for medical expenses if you are the victim of a personal physical accident during university activities or on the way to and from university activities.
Travel assistance: for medical costs, repatriation, etc. if students travel abroad on university business. More information on insurance can be found on the website of the Legal Affairs Department or through your private insurance. In case of an accident during your university activities at the host institution, please contact the UGent Legal Affairs Department and/or the Internationalisation Department immediately. You should also report by e-mail to the Belgian Embassy or Consulate in the country of destination, stating your name, length of stay and contact details. For travel outside the EU, we also advise you to register at www.travellersonline.diplomatie.be. In case of security problems, illness, accident or loss of identity papers, you should contact the local Belgian Embassy or Consulate as soon as possible.
